stdio: Don't redefine gets when using C++
We've hit this failure a few times in pkgsrc with packages which embed gnulib,
an example being the latest gnutls:
../../src/gl/stdio.h:1034:1: error: 'char* gets(char*)' conflicts with a previous declaration
_GL_WARN_ON_USE (gets, "gets is a security hole - use fgets instead");
^
/opt/tools/gcc49/lib/gcc/x86_64-sun-solaris2.11/4.9.2/include-fixed/iso/stdio_iso.h:259:14: note: previous declaration 'char* std::gets(char*)'
extern char *gets(char *);
^
Full build log is here:
http://us-east.manta.joyent.com/pkgsrc/public/reports/upstream-trunk32/20150602.2233/gnutls-3.3.15/build.log
We've fixed it a few different ways over time:
https://github.com/joyent/pkgsrc/blob/joyent/release/2015Q1/devel/m4/patches/patch-lib_stdio.in.h
https://github.com/joyent/pkgsrc/blob/joyent/release/2015Q1/math/octave/patches/patch-libgnu_stdio.in.h
https://github.com/joyent/pkgsrc/blob/joyent/release/2015Q1/security/gnutls/patches/patch-gl_stdio.in.h
but the cleanest fix appears to be the last, so I am proposing it here for
inclusion upstream.

stdio: fix use of PRIdMAX on modern mingw
Commit cf88e56ab broke the use of PRIdMAX and friends on modern
mingw64 installations. Basically, when requesting
_USE_MINGW_ANSI_STDIO, not only does mingw turn on support for %lld,
it also rewrites <inttypes.h> to provide PRIdMAX as "lld" instead of
"I64d" (but only when <stdio.h> is also included). But if a user is
NOT using the gnulib printf module, gnulib's <stdio.h> was still
giving printf() the system printf attribute, which causes the
compiler to then complain about an unknown %lld specifier, even though
we know we don't need to use the non-standard %I64d. So this patch
adds a configure-time probe that should work with older gcc (which
does not differentiate between printf flavors) and older mingw (where
_USE_MINGW_ANSI_STDIO has no impact on behavior), while fixing the
mismatch in flavors on modern systems.
* m4/stdio_h.m4 (gl_STDIO_H): Probe for printf flavor via inttypes.
* lib/stdio.in.h (_GL_ATTRIBUTE_FORMAT_PRINTF_SYSTEM): Use result
to work with modern mingw.

stdio: use __REDIRECT for fwrite, fwrite_unlocked
* lib/stdio.in.h (fwrite):
When working around bug 11959, use __REDIRECT rather than '#define

fix the -Wunused-value issue with clang, and it works with GCC too.

fwrite: silence __wur without using inline
The libvirt folks reported[1] a link error of multiple rpl_fwrite
definitions that hits only when optimization and FORTIFY_SOURCE
are both enabled, due to improper use of inline. But since that
particular use of rpl_fwrite exists only to work around a spurious
gcc warning on some versions of glibc, we can use gcc extensions
to acheive the same effect without using inline. This approach
copies from ignore-value.h.

Rationale:
Microsoft renamed the "Win32 API" to "Windows API", as it is available
on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows systems.
But in gnulib, we treat Cygwin like a Unix platform, therefore the main
line of distinction is between "native Windows" on one side and Unix/
POSIX systems on the other side. More details in
<https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnulib/2012-01/msg00027.html>.

stdio: don't require ignore_value around fwrite
This patch works around libc bug 11959
<http://sources.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=11959>.
Without this patch, applications must often write
ignore_value (fwrite (...)) even though the ignore_value is
not helpful here. It's common to write many objects, using
fwrite/printf/etc., and then use ferror to detect output error.
I considered making this patch optional, but decided against it,
because libc is obviously being inconsistent here: there is no
reason libc should insist that user code must inspect fwrite
return's value without also insisting that it inspect printf's,
putchar's, etc. If user code wants to have a strict style where
all these functions' values are checked (so that ferror need not
be checked), we could add support for that style in a new gnulib
module, but in the meantime it's better to be consistent and to
support common usage.
* lib/stdio.in.h (rpl_fwrite): Define this wrapper around fwrite,
to work around libc bug 11959, if __USE_FORTIFY_LEVEL indicates
that we are compiling in checking mode, and if not C++, and
if not already wrapping fwrite for some other reason.
(fwrite): #define to rpl_fwrite if the latter is defined.

warn-on-use: use instead of link-warning
Each *.in.h file serves two purposes - provide enough self-contained
content to serve as a replacement for the system header regardless of
the user's compiler, and offer the developer the ability to detect any
gnulib modules that might have been inadvertantly excluded. The
former requires independence from config.h, and routes everything
through a Makefile.am snippet that uses @@ substitution specific to
the modules that were in use, with details learned at configure time.
The latter works by poisoning anything that gnulib did not replace,
but which the developer had natively available, explaining why their
tests passed during development. Poisoning relies on gcc features,
and requires manual triggering by adding -DGNULIB_POSIXCHECK to
CFLAGS; it assumes that <config.h> is properly included. In fact, we
do not want to use @@ substitution for HAVE_DECL_* during poisoning,
because the warning is only relevant for the gnulib modules which were
not included, and thus where the m4 macros to set proper @@ values
have not been run. Furthermore, we only need to poison interfaces
that already have a declaration; if something is not declared, then
the developer wouldn't have been able to link, so their code won't be
using the problematic interface in the first place.

stdio: warn on suspicious uses
Using gets is almost ALWAYS wrong (it is extremely rare that you have
full control over stdin). POSIX 2008 marked it as obsolete, even
though C89 requires it. Attach a warning to remind developers. Add
a comment to sprintf explaining why it does not get this treatment.
Improve the warnings for fseek/fseeko (and ftell/ftello), with
comments justifying our position.
Some of our unit tests never use large files, so rather than drag
in a dependency on fseeko, they should be the first compilation
units to use _GL_NO_LARGE_FILES.

Per POSIX 2008, ssize_t needs to exist whether or not we are

build: pull in conditional headers during GNULIB_POSIXCHECK
Any time we conditionally include a header in order to satisfy
prerequisites of one module, we must also include that header
under GNULIB_POSIXCHECK to avoid compilation errors if that
module is not in use. If this is not done, then our link warning
override can occur before the system's declaration, which
causes a syntax error when the system header is finally included.

fcntl-h, stdio, sys_ioctl: fix declarations
We cannot use a function-like macro to provide a link-time warning
of a variadic function during GNULIB_POSIXCHECK; at least, not
without assuming C99 variadic macros. We can, however,
use an object-like macro (as was already done for printf).
On the other hand, this patch is only a stop-gap measure to fix
an obvious bug; a more complete patch that switches from a
link-time warning (specific to GNU ld, gcc, and ELF image) to
a compile-time attribute is in the works.
* lib/stdio.in.h (dprintf): Use of link warning on a variadic

fseek: avoid compilation failure when fflush is replaced
./gnulib-tool --import fseek fwritable failed on Debian, due
to broken fflush() pulling in rpl_fseeko that mistakenly
overwrote fseek() as function-like macro.
* m4/fseek.m4 (gl_REPLACE_FSEEK): New macro.
* m4/fseeko.m4 (gl_REPLACE_FSEEKO): Also replace fseek, if fseek
module is in use.
* lib/stdio.in.h (GNULIB_FSEEKO): Only poison fseek if fseek
module is not in use; since REPLACE_FSEEK worked otherwise.
(GNULIB_FTELLO): Likewise for ftell.
