Jason Haslam 70681ff7 2016-02-16T21:02:41 checkout: handle dirty submodules correctly Don't generate conflicts when checking out a modified submodule and the submodule is dirty or modified in the workdir.
Patrick Steinhardt f627e196 2016-05-02T15:47:54 checkout: set ignorecase=0 when config lookup fails When `git_repository__cvar` fails we may end up with a `ignorecase` value of `-1`. As we subsequently check if `ignorecase` is non-zero, we may end up reporting that data should be removed when in fact it should not. Err on the safer side and set `ignorecase = 0` when `git_repository__cvar` fails.
Carlos Martín Nieto 594a5d12 2016-02-18T12:28:06 Merge pull request #3619 from ethomson/win32_forbidden win32: allow us to read indexes with forbidden paths on win32
Edward Thomson 318b825e 2016-02-16T17:11:46 index: allow read of index w/ illegal entries Allow `git_index_read` to handle reading existing indexes with illegal entries. Allow the low-level `git_index_add` to add properly formed `git_index_entry`s even if they contain paths that would be illegal for the current filesystem (eg, `AUX`). Continue to disallow `git_index_add_bypath` from adding entries that are illegal universally illegal (eg, `.git`, `foo/../bar`).
Arthur Schreiber 3679ebae 2016-02-11T23:37:52 Horrible fix for #3173.
Patrick Steinhardt e2625457 2016-02-09T11:07:50 checkout: fix resource leak
Edward Thomson 25e84f95 2015-11-23T15:49:54 checkout: only consider nsecs when built that way When examining the working directory and determining whether it's up-to-date, only consider the nanoseconds in the index entry when built with `GIT_USE_NSEC`. This prevents us from believing that the working directory is always dirty when the index was originally written with a git client that uinderstands nsecs (like git 2.x).

Edward Thomson 6c014bcc 2015-09-29T12:18:17 diff: don't feed large files to xdiff
Edward Thomson ac2fba0e 2015-09-16T15:07:27 git_futils_mkdir_*: make a relative-to-base mkdir Untangle git_futils_mkdir from git_futils_mkdir_ext - the latter assumes that we own everything beneath the base, as if it were being called with a base of the repository or working directory, and is tailored towards checkout and ensuring that there is no bogosity beneath the base that must be cleaned up. This is (at best) slow and (at worst) unsafe in the larger context of a filesystem where we do not own things and cannot do things like unlink symlinks that are in our way.
Edward Thomson eea7c850 2015-09-16T05:44:27 checkout: overwrite files with differing modes When a file exists on disk and we're checking out a file that differs in executableness, remove the old file. This allows us to recreate the new file with p_open, which will take the new mode into account and handle setting the umask properly. Remove any notion of chmod'ing existing files, since it is now handled by the aforementioned removal and was incorrect, as it did not take umask into account.
Edward Thomson 7b73739f 2015-08-30T18:56:39 checkout: use pathlist-based iterators
Edward Thomson ed1c6446 2015-07-28T11:41:27 iterator: use an options struct instead of args
Matthew Plough 768f8be3 2015-06-30T19:00:41 Fix #3094 - improve use of portable size_t/ssize_t format specifiers. The header src/cc-compat.h defines portable format specifiers PRIuZ, PRIdZ, and PRIxZ. The original report highlighted the need to use these specifiers in examples/network/fetch.c. For this commit, I checked all C source and header files not in deps/ and transitioned to the appropriate format specifier where appropriate.
Carlos Martín Nieto c2418f46 2015-06-25T12:48:44 Rename FALLBACK to UNSPECIFIED Fallback describes the mechanism, while unspecified explains what the user is thinking.
Carlos Martín Nieto c6f489c9 2015-05-04T17:29:12 submodule: add an ignore option to status This lets us specify in the status call which ignore rules we want to use (optionally falling back to whatever the submodule has in its configuration). This removes one of the reasons for having `_set_ignore()` set the value in-memory. We re-use the `IGNORE_RESET` value for this as it is no longer relevant but has a similar purpose to `IGNORE_FALLBACK`. Similarly, we remove `IGNORE_DEFAULT` which does not have use outside of initializers and move that to fall back to the configuration as well.
Carlos Martín Nieto 64bbd47a 2015-05-04T17:09:21 submodule: don't let status change an existing instance As submodules are becomes more like values, we should not let a status check to update its properties. Instead of taking a submodule, have status take a repo and submodule name.
Carlos Martín Nieto dfda2f68 2015-04-27T19:27:29 submodule: remove the per-repo cache Having this cache and giving them out goes against our multithreading guarantees and it makes it impossible to use submodules in a multi-threaded environment, as any thread can ask for a refresh which may reallocate some string in the submodule struct which we've accessed in a different one via a getter. This makes the submodules behave more like remotes, where each object is created upon request and not shared except explicitly by the user. This means that some tests won't pass yet, as they assume they can affect the submodule objects in the cache and that will affect later operations.
Edward Thomson 96dd171e 2015-06-19T08:32:26 diff: preserve original mode in the index When updating the index during a diff, preserve the original mode, which prevents us from dropping the mode to what we have interpreted as on our system (eg, what the working directory claims it to be, which may be a lie on some systems.)
Edward Thomson 892abf93 2015-06-16T17:23:12 checkout: allow workdir to contain checkout target When checking out some file 'foo' that has been modified in the working directory, allow the checkout to proceed (do not conflict) if 'foo' is identical to the target of the checkout.
Edward Thomson 885b94aa 2015-05-28T15:26:13 Rename GIT_EMERGECONFLICT to GIT_ECONFLICT We do not error on "merge conflicts"; on the contrary, merge conflicts are a normal part of merging. We only error on "checkout conflicts", where a change exists in the index or the working directory that would otherwise be overwritten by performing the checkout. This *may* happen during merge (after the production of the new index that we're going to checkout) but it could happen during any checkout.
Edward Thomson 73dce1f6 2015-03-16T18:57:57 checkout: allow baseline to be specified as index Allow the baseline to be specified as an index, so that users need not write their index to a tree just to checkout with that as the baseline.
Edward Thomson 4beab1f8 2015-03-31T16:29:35 checkout: break case-changes into delete/add When checking out with a case-insensitive working directory, we want to change the case of items in the working directory to reflect changes that occured in the checkout target. Diff now has an option to break case-changing renames into delete/add.
Edward Thomson 05f69012 2015-03-31T16:28:13 checkout: remove blocking dir when FORCEd
Edward Thomson 3520c970 2015-03-27T15:39:28 Revert "Always checkout with case sensitive iterator" This reverts commit 40d791545abfb3cb71553a27dc64129e1a9bec28.
Leo Yang 69f0032b 2015-04-28T12:40:20 Fix some build warnings In checkout.c and filter.c we were casting a sub struct to a parent struct which breaks the strict aliasing rules in C. However we can use .parent or .base to access the parent struct to avoid the build warnings. In remote.c the local variable error was not initialized or updated in some cases. For unintialized error a build warning will be generated. So always keep error variable up-to-date.
John Fultz d3282680 2015-04-20T23:41:04 Fix index-adding functions to know when to trust filemodes. The idea...sometimes, a filemode is user-specified via an explicit git_index_entry. In this case, believe the user, always. Sometimes, it is instead built up by statting the file system. In those cases, go with the existing logic we have to determine whether the file system supports all filemodes and symlinks, and make the best guess. On file systems which have full filemode and symlink support, this commit should make no difference. On others (most notably Windows), this will fix problems things like: * git_index_add and git_index_add_frombuffer() should be believed. * As a consequence, git_checkout_tree should make the filemodes in the index match the ones in the tree. * And diffs with GIT_DIFF_UPDATE_INDEX don't write the wrong filemodes. * And merges, and probably other downstream stuff now fixed, too. This makes my previous changes to checkout.c unnecessary, so they are now reverted. Also, added a test for index_entry permissions from git_index_add and git_index_add_frombuffer, both of which failed before these changes.
John Fultz 6598aa7e 2015-04-16T14:10:34 Oops...need bitwise, not logical negation.
John Fultz 67db2bde 2015-03-10T12:02:45 Fix git_checkout_tree() to do index filemodes correctly on Windows. git_checkout_tree() has some fallback behaviors for file systems which don't have full support of filemodes. Generally works fine, but if a given file had a change of type from a 0644 to 0755 (i.e., you add executable permissions), the fallback behavior incorrectly triggers when writing hte updated index. This would cause a git_checkout_tree() command, even with the GIT_CHECKOUT_FORCE option set, to leave a dirty index on Windows. Also added checks to an existing test to catch this case.

Edward Thomson 3cda9cf2 2015-03-23T11:30:30 checkout: report correct invalid path
Carlos Martín Nieto 9a97f49e 2014-12-21T15:31:03 config: borrow refcounted references This changes the get_entry() method to return a refcounted version of the config entry, which you have to free when you're done. This allows us to avoid freeing the memory in which the entry is stored on a refresh, which may happen at any time for a live config. For this reason, get_string() has been forbidden on live configs and a new function get_string_buf() has been added, which stores the string in a git_buf which the user then owns. The functions which parse the string value takea advantage of the borrowing to parse safely and then release the entry.

Edward Thomson 500ec543 2015-02-03T01:46:01 checkout: hold seen dir paths in a map
Edward Thomson 9f779aac 2015-01-29T14:40:55 attrcache: don't re-read attrs during checkout During checkout, assume that the .gitattributes files aren't modified during the checkout. Instead, create an "attribute session" during checkout. Assume that attribute data read in the same checkout "session" hasn't been modified since the checkout started. (But allow subsequent checkouts to invalidate the cache.) Further, cache nonexistent git_attr_file data even when .gitattributes files are not found to prevent re-scanning for nonexistent files.
Edward Thomson 11888039 2015-01-23T00:18:42 checkout: free last created directory
Edward Thomson e74340b0 2015-01-14T18:47:00 checkout: remove files before writing new ones On case insensitive filesystems, we may have files in the working directory that case fold to a name we want to write. Edward Thomson 1d50b364 2015-01-12T16:16:27 checkout: introduce git_checkout_perfdata Checkout can now provide performance data about the number of (some) syscalls performed using an optional callback.
Edward Thomson 40d79154 2014-05-09T19:32:52 Always checkout with case sensitive iterator On a case-insensitive filesystem, we need to deal with case-changing renames (eg, foo -> FOO) by removing the old and adding the new, exactly as if we were on a case-sensitive filesystem. Update the `checkout::tree::can_cancel_checkout_from_notify` test, now that notifications are always sent case sensitively.
Edward Thomson a64119e3 2014-11-25T18:13:00 checkout: disallow bad paths on win32 Disallow: 1. paths with trailing dot 2. paths with trailing space 3. paths with trailing colon 4. paths that are 8.3 short names of .git folders ("GIT~1") 5. paths that are reserved path names (COM1, LPT1, etc). 6. paths with reserved DOS characters (colons, asterisks, etc) These paths would (without \\?\ syntax) be elided to other paths - for example, ".git." would be written as ".git". As a result, writing these paths literally (using \\?\ syntax) makes them hard to operate with from the shell, Windows Explorer or other tools. Disallow these.

Carlos Martín Nieto 62a617dc 2014-11-06T16:16:46 iterator: submodules are determined by an index or tree We cannot know from looking at .gitmodules whether a directory is a submodule or not. We need the index or tree we are comparing against to tell us. Otherwise we have to assume the entry in .gitmodules is stale or otherwise invalid. Thus we pass the index of the repository into the workdir iterator, even if we do not want to compare against it. This follows what git does, which even for `git diff <tree>`, it will consider staged submodules as such.

Edward Thomson 967f5a76 2014-05-23T14:50:51 git_checkout_index: checkout other indexes git_checkout_index can now check out other git_index's (that are not necessarily the repository index). This allows checkout_index to use the repository's index for stat cache information instead of the index data being checked out. git_merge and friends now check out their indexes directly instead of trying to blend it into the running index.
Alan Rogers 61bef72d 2014-05-20T23:57:40 Start adding GIT_DELTA_UNREADABLE and GIT_STATUS_WT_UNREADABLE.
Russell Belfer 5269008c 2014-05-06T16:01:49 Add filter options and ALLOW_UNSAFE Diff and status do not want core.safecrlf to actually raise an error regardless of the setting, so this extends the filter API with an additional options flags parameter and adds a flag so that filters can be applied with GIT_FILTER_OPT_ALLOW_UNSAFE, indicating that unsafe filter application should be downgraded from a failure to a warning.
Russell Belfer bc91347b 2014-04-30T11:16:31 Fix remaining init_options inconsistencies There were a couple of "init_opts()" functions a few more cases of structure initialization that I somehow missed.
Russell Belfer 94fb4aad 2014-04-28T14:48:41 Add diff option to update index stat cache When diff is scanning the working directory, if it finds a file where it is not sure if the index entry matches the working dir, it will recalculate the OID (which is pretty expensive). This adds a new flag to diff so that if the OID calculation finds that the file actually has not changed (i.e. just the modified time was altered or such), then it will refresh the stat cache in the index so that future calls to diff will not have to check the oid again.
Russell Belfer 0fc8e1f6 2014-04-28T14:34:55 Lay groundwork for updating stat cache in diff This reorganized the diff OID calculation to make it easier to correctly update the stat cache during a diff once the flags to do so are enabled. This includes marking the path of a git_index_entry as const so we can make a "fake" git_index_entry with a "const char *" path and not get warnings. I was a little surprised at how unobtrusive this change was, but I think it's probably a good thing.
Russell Belfer 240f4af3 2014-04-28T14:04:29 Add build option for diff internal statistics
Russell Belfer 219c89d1 2014-04-23T16:28:45 Treat ignored, empty, and untracked dirs different In the iterator, distinguish between ignores and empty directories so that diff and status can ignore empty directories, but checkout and stash can treat them as untracked items.
Russell Belfer 37da3685 2014-04-22T21:51:54 Make checkout match diff for untracked/ignored dir When diff finds an untracked directory, it emulates Git behavior by looking inside the directory to see if there are any untracked items inside it. If there are only ignored items inside the dir, then diff considers it ignored, even if there is no direct ignore rule for it. Checkout was not copying this behavior - when it found an untracked directory, it just treated it as untracked. Unfortunately, when combined with GIT_CHECKOUT_REMOVE_UNTRACKED, this made is seem that checkout (and stash, which uses checkout) was removing ignored items when you had only asked it to remove untracked ones. This commit moves the logic for advancing past an untracked dir while scanning for non-ignored items into an iterator helper fn, and uses that for both diff and checkout.
Russell Belfer 24d17de2 2014-04-02T12:07:27 Make stash and checkout ignore contained repos To emulate git, stash should not remove untracked git repositories inside the parent repo, and checkout's REMOVE_UNTRACKED should also skip over these items. `git stash` actually prints a warning message for these items. That should be possible with a checkout notify callback if you wanted to, although it would require a bit of extra logic as things are at the moment.
Russell Belfer 52bb0476 2014-03-14T13:53:15 Clean up index snapshot function naming Clear up some of the various "find" functions and the snapshot API naming to be things I like more.
Russell Belfer 3dbee456 2014-02-07T14:10:35 Some index internals refactoring Again, laying groundwork for some index iterator changes, this contains a bunch of code refactorings for index internals that should make it easier down the line to add locking around index modifications. Also this removes the redundant prefix_position function and fixes some potential memory leaks.
Russell Belfer c67fd4c9 2014-02-07T11:20:36 Some vector utility tweaks This is just laying some groundwork for internal index changes that I'm working on.
Jiri Pospisil 49653665 2014-04-02T18:21:41 checkout: Fix submodule_is_config_only's return value
Russell Belfer 591e8295 2014-03-25T16:52:01 Fix submodule leaks and invalid references This cleans up some places I missed that could hold onto submodule references and cleans up the way in which the repository cache is both reloaded and released so that existing submodule references aren't destroyed inappropriately.
Russell Belfer a15c7802 2014-03-25T09:14:48 Make submodules externally refcounted `git_submodule` objects were already refcounted internally in case the submodule name was different from the path at which it was stored. This makes that refcounting externally used as well, so `git_submodule_lookup` and `git_submodule_add_setup` return an object that requires a `git_submodule_free` when done.

Russell Belfer 25babd02 2014-01-30T11:38:59 Fix checkout NONE to not remove file If you are checking out NONE, then don't remove.
Russell Belfer 71ae7601 2014-01-30T11:30:16 Force explicit remove of files instead of defer The checkout code used to defer removal of "blocking" files in checkouts until the blocked item was actually being written (since we have already checked that the removing the block is acceptable according to the update rules). Unfortunately, this resulted in an intermediate index state where both the blocking and new items were in the index which is no longer allowed. Now we just remove the blocking item in the first pass so it never needs to coexist. In cases where there are typechanges, this could result in a bit more churn of removing and recreating intermediate directories, but I'm going to assume that is an unusual case and the churn will not be too costly.

Edward Thomson c1d648c5 2014-01-08T18:29:42 merge_file should use more aggressive levels The default merge_file level was XDL_MERGE_MINIMAL, which will produce conflicts where there should not be in the case where both sides were changed identically. Change the defaults to be more aggressive (XDL_MERGE_ZEALOUS) which will more aggressively compress non-conflicts. This matches git.git's defaults. Increase testing around reverting a previously reverted commit to illustrate this problem.

Russell Belfer 9cfce273 2013-12-12T12:11:38 Cleanups, renames, and leak fixes This renames git_vector_free_all to the better git_vector_free_deep and also contains a couple of memory leak fixes based on valgrind checks. The fixes are specifically: failure to free global dir path variables when not compiled with threading on and failure to free filters from the filter registry that had not be initialized fully.
Russell Belfer cbd04896 2013-12-10T14:38:35 Fix checkout notify callback docs and tests The checkout notify callback behavior on non-zero return values was not being tested. This adds tests, fixes a bug with positive values, and clarifies the documentation to make it clear that the checkout can be canceled via this mechanism.
Russell Belfer 26c1cb91 2013-12-09T09:44:03 One more rename/cleanup for callback err functions
Russell Belfer 25e0b157 2013-12-06T15:07:57 Remove converting user error to GIT_EUSER This changes the behavior of callbacks so that the callback error code is not converted into GIT_EUSER and instead we propagate the return value through to the caller. Instead of using the giterr_capture and giterr_restore functions, we now rely on all functions to pass back the return value from a callback. To avoid having a return value with no error message, the user can call the public giterr_set_str or some such function to set an error message. There is a new helper 'giterr_set_callback' that functions can invoke after making a callback which ensures that some error message was set in case the callback did not set one. In places where the sign of the callback return value is meaningful (e.g. positive to skip, negative to abort), only the negative values are returned back to the caller, obviously, since the other values allow for continuing the loop. The hardest parts of this were in the checkout code where positive return values were overloaded as meaningful values for checkout. I fixed this by adding an output parameter to many of the internal checkout functions and removing the overload. This added some code, but it is probably a better implementation. There is some funkiness in the network code where user provided callbacks could be returning a positive or a negative value and we want to rely on that to cancel the loop. There are still a couple places where an user error might get turned into GIT_EUSER there, I think, though none exercised by the tests.
Russell Belfer fcd324c6 2013-12-06T15:04:31 Add git_vector_free_all There are a lot of places that we call git__free on each item in a vector and then call git_vector_free on the vector itself. This just wraps that up into one convenient helper function.

As a result of using that in places, we need to be more thorough with capturing errors that happen inside a callback when used internally. To help with that, this also adds giterr_capture and giterr_restore so that when we internally use a foreach-type function that clears errors and converts them to GIT_EUSER, it is easier to restore not just the return value, but the actual error message text.
