25e0b157	2013-12-06T15:07:57	Remove converting user error to GIT_EUSER This changes the behavior of callbacks so that the callback error code is not converted into GIT_EUSER and instead we propagate the return value through to the caller. Instead of using the giterr_capture and giterr_restore functions, we now rely on all functions to pass back the return value from a callback. To avoid having a return value with no error message, the user can call the public giterr_set_str or some such function to set an error message. There is a new helper 'giterr_set_callback' that functions can invoke after making a callback which ensures that some error message was set in case the callback did not set one. In places where the sign of the callback return value is meaningful (e.g. positive to skip, negative to abort), only the negative values are returned back to the caller, obviously, since the other values allow for continuing the loop. The hardest parts of this were in the checkout code where positive return values were overloaded as meaningful values for checkout. I fixed this by adding an output parameter to many of the internal checkout functions and removing the overload. This added some code, but it is probably a better implementation. There is some funkiness in the network code where user provided callbacks could be returning a positive or a negative value and we want to rely on that to cancel the loop. There are still a couple places where an user error might get turned into GIT_EUSER there, I think, though none exercised by the tests.

The lookup and even simple value checking can all happen automatically without custom filter code. Behind the scenes, I changed the logic for finding files to have a notion of a git_strarray that represents a search path and to store a separate search path for each of the three tiers of config file. For each tier, I implemented a function to initialize it to default values (generally based on environment variables), and then general interfaces to get it, set it, reset it, and prepend new directories to it. Next, I exposed these interfaces through the git_libgit2_opts interface, reusing the GIT_CONFIG_LEVEL_SYSTEM, etc., constants for the user to control which search path they were modifying. There are alternative designs for the opts interface / argument ordering, so I'm putting this phase out for discussion. Additionally, I ended up doing a little bit of clean up regarding attr.h and attr_file.h, adding a new attrcache.h so the other two files wouldn't have to be included in so many places.

To support that, I extended `git_futils_readbuffer_updated` to optionally check file size in addition to mtime, and I added a new function `git_filebuf_stats` to fetch the mtime and size for an open filebuf (so that the config could be easily refreshed after a write). Lastly, I moved some similar file checking code for attributes into filebuf. It is still only being used for attrs, but it seems potentially reusable, so I thought I'd move it over.

In that code, unescaped whitespace was considered terminal to the pattern, so a file with internal whitespace was excluded from the matched files. The fix was to add a mode to that code that allows spaces and tabs inside patterns. This mode only comes into play when parsing in-memory strings. * The other issue was undetected, but it was in the recently added code to reload gitattributes / gitignores when they were changed on disk. That code was not clearing out the old values from the cached file content before reparsing which meant that newly added patterns would be read in, but deleted patterns would not be removed. The fix was to clear the vector of patterns in a cached file before reparsing the file.

To remove the use of some GIT_UNUSED, I ended up adding a couple of new iterators for hashtables that allow you to iterator just over keys or just over values. In making this change, I found a bug in the clar tests (where we were doing count++ but meant to do (count)++ to increment the value). I fixed that but then found the test failing because it was not really using an empty repo. So, I took some of the code that I wrote for iterator testing and moved it to clar_helpers.c, then made use of that to make it easier to open fixtures on a per test basis even within a single test file.

This also adds three high-level helper functions to look up config values with no errors and a fallback value. Add attributes to filters and fix registry The filter registry as implemented was too primitive to actually work once multiple filters were coming into play. This expands the implementation of the registry to handle multiple prioritized filters correctly. Additionally, this adds an "attributes" field to a filter that makes it really really easy to implement filters that are based on one or more attribute values. The lookup and even simple value checking can all happen automatically without custom filter code. Lastly, with the registry improvements, this fills out the filter lifecycle callbacks, with initialize and shutdown callbacks that will be called before the filter is first used and after it is last invoked. This allows for system-wide initialization and cleanup by the filter.

Implement global/system file search paths The goal of this work is to expose the search logic for "global", "system", and "xdg" files through the git_libgit2_opts() interface. Behind the scenes, I changed the logic for finding files to have a notion of a git_strarray that represents a search path and to store a separate search path for each of the three tiers of config file. For each tier, I implemented a function to initialize it to default values (generally based on environment variables), and then general interfaces to get it, set it, reset it, and prepend new directories to it. Next, I exposed these interfaces through the git_libgit2_opts interface, reusing the GIT_CONFIG_LEVEL_SYSTEM, etc., constants for the user to control which search path they were modifying. There are alternative designs for the opts interface / argument ordering, so I'm putting this phase out for discussion. Additionally, I ended up doing a little bit of clean up regarding attr.h and attr_file.h, adding a new attrcache.h so the other two files wouldn't have to be included in so many places.

Add git_config_refresh() API to reload config This adds a new API that allows users to reload the config if the file has changed on disk. A new config callback function to refresh the config was added. The modified time and file size are used to test if the file needs to be reloaded (and are now stored in the disk backend object). In writing tests, just using mtime was a problem / race, so I wanted to check file size as well. To support that, I extended `git_futils_readbuffer_updated` to optionally check file size in addition to mtime, and I added a new function `git_filebuf_stats` to fetch the mtime and size for an open filebuf (so that the config could be easily refreshed after a write). Lastly, I moved some similar file checking code for attributes into filebuf. It is still only being used for attrs, but it seems potentially reusable, so I thought I'd move it over.

Update iterators for consistency across library This updates all the `foreach()` type functions across the library that take callbacks from the user to have a consistent behavior. The rules are: * A callback terminates the loop by returning any non-zero value * Once the callback returns non-zero, it will not be called again (i.e. the loop stops all iteration regardless of state) * If the callback returns non-zero, the parent fn returns GIT_EUSER * Although the parent returns GIT_EUSER, no error will be set in the library and `giterr_last()` will return NULL if called. This commit makes those changes across the library and adds tests for most of the iteration APIs to make sure that they follow the above rules.

Fix bugs for status with spaces and reloaded attrs This fixes two bugs: * Issue #728 where git_status_file was not working for files that contain spaces. This was caused by reusing the "fnmatch" parsing code from ignore and attribute files to interpret the "pathspec" that constrained the files to apply the status to. In that code, unescaped whitespace was considered terminal to the pattern, so a file with internal whitespace was excluded from the matched files. The fix was to add a mode to that code that allows spaces and tabs inside patterns. This mode only comes into play when parsing in-memory strings. * The other issue was undetected, but it was in the recently added code to reload gitattributes / gitignores when they were changed on disk. That code was not clearing out the old values from the cached file content before reparsing which meant that newly added patterns would be read in, but deleted patterns would not be removed. The fix was to clear the vector of patterns in a cached file before reparsing the file.

Refactor git_repository_open with new options Add a new command `git_repository_open_ext` with extended options that control how searching for a repository will be done. The existing `git_repository_open` and `git_repository_discover` are reimplemented on top of it. We may want to change the default behavior of `git_repository_open` but this commit does not do that. Improve support for "gitdir" files where the work dir is separate from the repo and support for the "separate-git-dir" config. Also, add support for opening repos created with `git-new-workdir` script (although I have only confirmed that they can be opened, not that all functions work correctly). There are also a few minor changes that came up: - Fix `git_path_prettify` to allow in-place prettifying. - Fix `git_path_root` to support backslashes on Win32. Clean up GIT_UNUSED macros on all platforms It turns out that commit 31e9cfc4cbcaf1b38cdd3dbe3282a8f57e5366a5 did not fix the GIT_USUSED behavior on all platforms. This commit walks through and really cleans things up more thoroughly, getting rid of the unnecessary stuff. To remove the use of some GIT_UNUSED, I ended up adding a couple of new iterators for hashtables that allow you to iterator just over keys or just over values. In making this change, I found a bug in the clar tests (where we were doing *count++ but meant to do (*count)++ to increment the value). I fixed that but then found the test failing because it was not really using an empty repo. So, I took some of the code that I wrote for iterator testing and moved it to clar_helpers.c, then made use of that to make it easier to open fixtures on a per test basis even within a single test file.
