path: don't join paths in git_path_find_dir
Let `git_path_find_dir` simply take a `git_buf` that contains a
directory or a file, instead of trying to both join a path AND then deal
with prettifying it or its basename. This allows consumers to join
paths themselves (and apply any necessary rules - like fitting within
MAX_PATH).

attr_file: ignore macros defined in subdirectories
Right now, we are unconditionally applying all macros found in a
gitatttributes file. But quoting gitattributes(5):
Custom macro attributes can be defined only in top-level
gitattributes files ($GIT_DIR/info/attributes, the .gitattributes
file at the top level of the working tree, or the global or
system-wide gitattributes files), not in .gitattributes files in
working tree subdirectories. The built-in macro attribute "binary"
is equivalent to:
So gitattribute files in subdirectories of the working tree may
explicitly _not_ contain macro definitions, but we do not currently
enforce this limitation.
This patch introduces a new parameter to the gitattributes parser that
tells whether macros are allowed in the current file or not. If set to
`false`, we will still parse macros, but silently ignore them instead of
adding them to the list of defined macros. Update all callers to
correctly determine whether the to-be-parsed file may contain macros or
not. Most importantly, when walking up the directory hierarchy, we will
only set it to `true` once it reaches the root directory of the repo
itself.
Add a test that verifies that we are indeed not applying macros from
subdirectories. Previous to these changes, the test would've failed.

attr: fix attribute lookup if repo has no common directory
If creating a repository without a common directory (e.g. by
using `git_repository_new`), then `git_repository_item_path` will
return `GIT_ENOTFOUND` for every file that's usually located in
this directory. While we do not care for this case when looking
up the "info/attributes" file, we fail to properly ignore these
errors when setting up or collecting attributes files. Thus, the
gitattributes lookup is broken and will only ever return
`GIT_ENOTFOUND`.
Fix this issue by properly ignoring `GIT_ENOTFOUND` returned by
`git_repository_item_path`.

strmap: introduce high-level setter for key/value pairs
Currently, one would use the function `git_strmap_insert` to insert key/value
pairs into a map. This function has historically been a macro, which is why its
syntax is kind of weird: instead of returning an error code directly, it instead
has to be passed a pointer to where the return value shall be stored. This does
not match libgit2's common idiom of directly returning error codes.
Introduce a new function `git_strmap_set`, which takes as parameters the map,
key and value and directly returns an error code. Convert all callers of
`git_strmap_insert` to make use of it.

maps: use uniform lifecycle management functions
Currently, the lifecycle functions for maps (allocation, deallocation, resize)
are not named in a uniform way and do not have a uniform function signature.
Rename the functions to fix that, and stick to libgit2's naming scheme of saying
`git_foo_new`. This results in the following new interface for allocation:
- `int git_<t>map_new(git_<t>map **out)` to allocate a new map, returning an
error code if we ran out of memory
- `void git_<t>map_free(git_<t>map *map)` to free a map
- `void git_<t>map_clear(git<t>map *map)` to remove all entries from a map
This commit also fixes all existing callers.

attr: avoid stat'ting files for bare repositories
Depending on whether the path we want to look up an attribute for is a
file or a directory, the fnmatch function will be called with different
flags. Because of this, we have to first stat(3) the path to determine
whether it is a file or directory in `git_attr_path__init`. This is
wasteful though in bare repositories, where we can already be assured
that the path will never exist at all due to there being no worktree. In
this case, we will execute an unnecessary syscall, which might be
noticeable on networked file systems.
What happens right now is that we always pass the `GIT_DIR_FLAG_UNKOWN`
flag to `git_attr_path__init`, which causes it to `stat` the file itself
to determine its type. As it is calling `git_path_isdir` on the path,
which will always return `false` in case the path does not exist, we end
up with the path always being treated as a file in case of a bare
repository. As such, we can just check the bare-repository case in all
callers and then pass in `GIT_DIR_FLAG_FALSE` ourselves, avoiding the
need to `stat`. While this may not always be correct, it at least is no
different from our current behavior.

Make sure to always include "common.h" first
Next to including several files, our "common.h" header also declares
various macros which are then used throughout the project. As such, we
have to make sure to always include this file first in all
implementation files. Otherwise, we might encounter problems or even
silent behavioural differences due to macros or defines not being
defined as they should be. So in fact, our header and implementation
files should make sure to always include "common.h" first.
This commit does so by establishing a common include pattern. Header
files inside of "src" will now always include "common.h" as its first
other file, separated by a newline from all the other includes to make
it stand out as special. There are two cases for the implementation
files. If they do have a matching header file, they will always include
this one first, leading to "common.h" being transitively included as
first file. If they do not have a matching header file, they instead
include "common.h" as first file themselves.
This fixes the outlined problems and will become our standard practice
for header and source files inside of the "src/" from now on.

repository: use `git_repository_item_path`
The recent introduction of the commondir variable of a repository
requires callers to distinguish whether their files are part of
the dot-git directory or the common directory shared between
multpile worktrees. In order to take the burden from callers and
unify knowledge on which files reside where, the
`git_repository_item_path` function has been introduced which
encapsulate this knowledge.
Modify most existing callers of `git_repository_path` to use
`git_repository_item_path` instead, thus making them implicitly
aware of the common directory.

Fix attribute lookup in index for bare repos
When using a bare repo with an index, libgit2 attempts to read
files from the index. It caches those files based on the path
to the file, specifically the path to the directory that contains
the file.
If there is no working directory, we use `git_path_dirname_r` to
get the path to the containing directory. However, for the
`.gitattributes` file in the root of the repository, this ends up
normalizing the containing path to `"."` instead of the empty
string and the lookup the `.gitattributes` data fails.
This adds a test of attribute lookups on bare repos and also
fixes the problem by simply rewriting `"."` to be `""`.

Preload attribute files that may contain macros
There was a latent bug where files that use macro definitions
could be parsed before the macro definitions were loaded. Because
of attribute file caching, preloading files that are going to be
used doesn't add a significant amount of overhead, so let's always
preload any files that could contain macros before we assemble the
actual vector of files to scan for attributes.

Remove converting user error to GIT_EUSER
This changes the behavior of callbacks so that the callback error
code is not converted into GIT_EUSER and instead we propagate the
return value through to the caller. Instead of using the
giterr_capture and giterr_restore functions, we now rely on all
functions to pass back the return value from a callback.
To avoid having a return value with no error message, the user
can call the public giterr_set_str or some such function to set
an error message. There is a new helper 'giterr_set_callback'
that functions can invoke after making a callback which ensures
that some error message was set in case the callback did not set
one.
In places where the sign of the callback return value is
meaningful (e.g. positive to skip, negative to abort), only the
negative values are returned back to the caller, obviously, since
the other values allow for continuing the loop.
The hardest parts of this were in the checkout code where positive
return values were overloaded as meaningful values for checkout.
I fixed this by adding an output parameter to many of the internal
checkout functions and removing the overload. This added some
code, but it is probably a better implementation.
There is some funkiness in the network code where user provided
callbacks could be returning a positive or a negative value and
we want to rely on that to cancel the loop. There are still a
couple places where an user error might get turned into GIT_EUSER
there, I think, though none exercised by the tests.

Further EUSER and error propagation fixes
This continues auditing all the places where GIT_EUSER is being
returned and making sure to clear any existing error using the
new giterr_user_cancel helper. As a result, places that relied
on intercepting GIT_EUSER but having the old error preserved also
needed to be cleaned up to correctly stash and then retrieve the
actual error.
Additionally, as I encountered places where error codes were not
being propagated correctly, I tried to fix them up. A number of
those fixes are included in the this commit as well.

Improve GIT_EUSER handling
This adds giterr_user_cancel to return GIT_EUSER and clear any
error message that is sitting around. As a result of using that
in places, we need to be more thorough with capturing errors that
happen inside a callback when used internally. To help with that,
this also adds giterr_capture and giterr_restore so that when we
internally use a foreach-type function that clears errors and
converts them to GIT_EUSER, it is easier to restore not just the
return value, but the actual error message text.

Add config read fns with controlled error behavior
This adds `git_config__lookup_entry` which will look up a key in
a config and return either the entry or NULL if the key was not
present. Optionally, it can either suppress all errors or can
return them (although not finding the key is not an error for this
function). Unlike other accessors, this does not normalize the
config key string, so it must only be used when the key is known
to be in normalized form (i.e. all lower-case before the first dot
and after the last dot, with no invalid characters).
This also adds three high-level helper functions to look up config
values with no errors and a fallback value. The three functions
are for string, bool, and int values, and will resort to the
fallback value for any error that arises. They are:
* `git_config__get_string_force`
* `git_config__get_bool_force`
* `git_config__get_int_force`
None of them normalize the config `key` either, so they can only
be used for internal cases where the key is known to be in normal
format.

Add attributes to filters and fix registry
The filter registry as implemented was too primitive to actually
work once multiple filters were coming into play. This expands
the implementation of the registry to handle multiple prioritized
filters correctly.
Additionally, this adds an "attributes" field to a filter that
makes it really really easy to implement filters that are based
on one or more attribute values. The lookup and even simple value
checking can all happen automatically without custom filter code.
Lastly, with the registry improvements, this fills out the filter
lifecycle callbacks, with initialize and shutdown callbacks that
will be called before the filter is first used and after it is
last invoked. This allows for system-wide initialization and
cleanup by the filter.

Implement global/system file search paths
The goal of this work is to expose the search logic for "global",
"system", and "xdg" files through the git_libgit2_opts() interface.
Behind the scenes, I changed the logic for finding files to have a
notion of a git_strarray that represents a search path and to store
a separate search path for each of the three tiers of config file.
For each tier, I implemented a function to initialize it to default
values (generally based on environment variables), and then general
interfaces to get it, set it, reset it, and prepend new directories
to it.
Next, I exposed these interfaces through the git_libgit2_opts
interface, reusing the GIT_CONFIG_LEVEL_SYSTEM, etc., constants
for the user to control which search path they were modifying.
There are alternative designs for the opts interface / argument
ordering, so I'm putting this phase out for discussion.
Additionally, I ended up doing a little bit of clean up regarding
attr.h and attr_file.h, adding a new attrcache.h so the other two
files wouldn't have to be included in so many places.

Add git_config_refresh() API to reload config
This adds a new API that allows users to reload the config if the
file has changed on disk. A new config callback function to
refresh the config was added.
The modified time and file size are used to test if the file needs
to be reloaded (and are now stored in the disk backend object).
In writing tests, just using mtime was a problem / race, so I
wanted to check file size as well. To support that, I extended
`git_futils_readbuffer_updated` to optionally check file size in
addition to mtime, and I added a new function `git_filebuf_stats`
to fetch the mtime and size for an open filebuf (so that the
config could be easily refreshed after a write).
Lastly, I moved some similar file checking code for attributes
into filebuf. It is still only being used for attrs, but it
seems potentially reusable, so I thought I'd move it over.

that as a common error code for marking the end of iteration when
using a iterator style of object.

Update iterators for consistency across library
This updates all the `foreach()` type functions across the library
that take callbacks from the user to have a consistent behavior.
The rules are:
* A callback terminates the loop by returning any non-zero value
* Once the callback returns non-zero, it will not be called again
(i.e. the loop stops all iteration regardless of state)
* If the callback returns non-zero, the parent fn returns GIT_EUSER
* Although the parent returns GIT_EUSER, no error will be set in
the library and `giterr_last()` will return NULL if called.
This commit makes those changes across the library and adds tests
for most of the iteration APIs to make sure that they follow the
above rules.

attr: Do not export variables externally
Fixes #824
Exporting variables in a dynamic library is a PITA. Let's keep
these values internally and wrap them through a helper method.
This doesn't break the external API. @arrbee, aren't you glad I turned
the `GIT_ATTR_` macros into function macros? :sparkles:

Fix bugs for status with spaces and reloaded attrs
This fixes two bugs:
* Issue #728 where git_status_file was not working for files
that contain spaces. This was caused by reusing the "fnmatch"
parsing code from ignore and attribute files to interpret the
"pathspec" that constrained the files to apply the status to.
In that code, unescaped whitespace was considered terminal to
the pattern, so a file with internal whitespace was excluded
from the matched files. The fix was to add a mode to that code
that allows spaces and tabs inside patterns. This mode only
comes into play when parsing in-memory strings.
* The other issue was undetected, but it was in the recently
added code to reload gitattributes / gitignores when they were
changed on disk. That code was not clearing out the old values
from the cached file content before reparsing which meant that
newly added patterns would be read in, but deleted patterns
would not be removed. The fix was to clear the vector of
patterns in a cached file before reparsing the file.

Add cache busting to attribute cache
This makes the git attributes and git ignores cache check
stat information before using the file contents from the
cache. For cached files from the index, it checks the SHA
of the file instead. This should reduce the need to ever
call `git_attr_cache_flush()` in most situations.
This commit also fixes the `git_status_should_ignore` API
to use the libgit2 standard parameter ordering.

Support reading attributes from index
Depending on the operation, we need to consider gitattributes
in both the work dir and the index. This adds a parameter to
all of the gitattributes related functions that allows user
control of attribute reading behavior (i.e. prefer workdir,
prefer index, only use index).
This fix also covers allowing us to check attributes (and
hence do diff and status) on bare repositories.
This was a somewhat larger change that I hoped because it had
to change the cache key used for gitattributes files.

Convert hashtable usage over to khash
This updates khash.h with some extra features (like error checking
on allocations, ability to use wrapped malloc, foreach calls, etc),
creates two high-level wrappers around khash: `git_khash_str` and
`git_khash_oid` for string-to-void-ptr and oid-to-void-ptr tables,
then converts all of the old usage of `git_hashtable` over to use
these new hashtables.
For `git_khash_str`, I've tried to create a set of macros that
yield an API not too unlike the old `git_hashtable` API. Since
the oid hashtable is only used in one file, I haven't bother to
set up all those macros and just use the khash APIs directly for
now.

Refactor git_repository_open with new options
Add a new command `git_repository_open_ext` with extended options
that control how searching for a repository will be done. The
existing `git_repository_open` and `git_repository_discover` are
reimplemented on top of it. We may want to change the default
behavior of `git_repository_open` but this commit does not do that.
Improve support for "gitdir" files where the work dir is separate
from the repo and support for the "separate-git-dir" config. Also,
add support for opening repos created with `git-new-workdir` script
(although I have only confirmed that they can be opened, not that
all functions work correctly).
There are also a few minor changes that came up:
- Fix `git_path_prettify` to allow in-place prettifying.
- Fix `git_path_root` to support backslashes on Win32. This fix
should help many repo open/discover scenarios - it is the one
function called when opening before prettifying the path.
- Tweak `git_config_get_string` to set the "out" pointer to NULL
if the config value is not found. Allows some other cleanup.
- Fix a couple places that should have been calling
`git_repository_config__weakptr` and were not.
- Fix `cl_git_sandbox_init` clar helper to support bare repos.

Clean up GIT_UNUSED macros on all platforms
It turns out that commit 31e9cfc4cbcaf1b38cdd3dbe3282a8f57e5366a5
did not fix the GIT_USUSED behavior on all platforms. This commit
walks through and really cleans things up more thoroughly, getting
rid of the unnecessary stuff.
To remove the use of some GIT_UNUSED, I ended up adding a couple
of new iterators for hashtables that allow you to iterator just
over keys or just over values.
In making this change, I found a bug in the clar tests (where we
were doing *count++ but meant to do (*count)++ to increment the
value). I fixed that but then found the test failing because it
was not really using an empty repo. So, I took some of the code
that I wrote for iterator testing and moved it to clar_helpers.c,
then made use of that to make it easier to open fixtures on a
per test basis even within a single test file.

Uniform iterators for trees, index, and workdir
This create a new git_iterator type of object that provides a
uniform interface for iterating over the index, an arbitrary
tree, or the working directory of a repository.
As part of this, git ignore support was extended to support
push and pop of directory-based ignore files as the working
directory is being traversed (so the array of ignores does
not have to be recreated at each directory during traveral).
There are a number of other small utility functions in buffer,
path, vector, and fileops that are included in this patch
that made the iterator implementation cleaner.

Move path related functions from fileops to path
This takes all of the functions that look up simple data about
paths (such as `git_futils_isdir`) and moves them over to path.h
(becoming `git_path_isdir`). This leaves fileops.h just with
functions that actually manipulate the filesystem or look at
the file contents in some way.
As part of this, the dir.h header which is really just for win32
support was moved into win32 (with some minor changes).

Remove poor git__removechar function
Going back over this, the git__removechar function was not
needed (only invoked once) and is actually mislabeled. As
implemented, it really only made sense for removing backslash
characters, since two of the "removed" characters in a row
would include the second one -- i.e. it really implements
stripping backslash-escaped strings where a backslash allows
internal whitespace in a word.

Fix handling of relative paths for attrs
Per issue #533, the handling of relative paths in attribute
and ignore files was not right. Fixed this by pre-joining
the relative path of the attribute/ignore file onto the match
string when a full path match is required.
Unfortunately, fixing this required a bit more code than I
would have liked because I had to juggle things around so that
the fnmatch parser would have sufficient information to prepend
the relative path when it was needed.
