Charlie Lao 86ca5d2b 2020-10-01T11:56:05 Vulkan: Add plumbing to render pass when ImageHelper gets deleted ImageHelper object is not refcounted and garbage collected and endRenderPass call is deferred until next render pass starts. This caused a situation that an ImageHelper object gets deleted while still referenced in the open render pass. This CL make sure that we call into all shared context's open renderpass when an image goes away so that they can take appropriate action for this. Shahbaz Youssefi f39e0f01 2020-09-07T23:07:37 Vulkan: Use subpass to unresolve render-to-texture attachments GL_EXT_multisampled_render_to_texture allows singlesampled textures to be used with multisampled framebuffers in such a way that the final resolve operation is automatically done. In Vulkan terminology, the render-to-texture GL attachment is used as a Vulkan subpass resolve attachment with an implicit (ideally-)lazy-memory multisampled image as the color attachment. This extension expects that if the texture is drawn to after the automatic resolve, the implicit multisampled image would take its fragment colors from the singlesampled image. In other words, the opposite of a resolve operation should be automatically performed at the start of the render pass. This change refers to this operation as "unresolve". The goal of this extension is to allow tiling GPUs to always keep multisampled data on tile memory and only ever load/store singlesampled data. The latter is achieved by using a subpass resolve attachment and setting storeOp of the multisampled color attachment to DONT_CARE. This change achieves the former by using an initial subpass that uses the resolve attachment as input attachment, draws into the multisampled color attachment and sets loadOp of said attachment to DONT_CARE. This change makes sure that they never use loadOp=LOAD. Additionally fixes a bug where clears applied to MSRTT depth/stencil textures didn't take effect because they were applied to the multisampled image (since the resolved image was not given to the render target). Shahbaz Youssefi a0d048a4 2020-08-27T12:03:02 Vulkan: Fool-proof usage of GL and VK level indices Using boxed types, this change allows the compiler to catch errors when a level index in one space (e.g. GL) is mistakenly used in another space (e.g. VK). This change uncovered a number of bugs due to such mistakes which are fixed. Mistakes are still possible when the index is explicitly extracted, for example to be given to a Vulkan command, or when it's created, for example when retrieved from gl::ImageIndex::getLevelIndex. Future work can include using gl::LevelIndex in gl::ImageIndex directly to alleviate the latter at least. Jamie Madill ea3f501e 2020-08-18T11:13:33 Feedback Loop Redesign 3/3: Remove feedback loop tracking. We now we detect feedback loops by tracking the Framebuffers that the Texture is bound to. We still have the old tracking method that counts sampler and image bindings in the code as well. This CL removes the old front-end tracking for feedback loops. It's no longer used by any back-ends. This removal should reduce CPU overhead around Texture and Program binding changes. Reverts the image binding tracking to the simpler scheme that tracks if a Texture has ever been bound as an Image. This should practically have little or no perf effect and we can reinstate some simpler tracking in the future if required. Jamie Madill 25b0de6b 2020-08-01T13:45:11 Vulkan: Squash Texture+ImageView Serial and improve caching. Previously we regenerated TextureSerial on Texture state changes such as base/max level changes. This caused ANGLE to update descriptor sets even though it was using the same image view handles. This change instead uses an ImageViewSubresourceSerial which includes both a serial for the ImageView and a 32-bit packed subresource range. The CL speeds up NBA2k because ANGLE no longer writes new descriptors for Texture max level changes. Local testing showed up to a 40% speedup. Also adds a regression test with a counter for the number of descriptor set writes in a frame. This change will also be useful in upcoming changes that track Image serials in the RenderPass. Instead of refreshing sampler serials every time the SamplerVk or TextureVk has a state change we can give a VkSampler a unique serial. The serial is unique to this VkSampler and repeated state changes will fetch the same Serial from the SamplerCache. This allows for more cache hits. We store the the new Serial together with the VkSampler in a SamplerHelper class and store references to a SamplerHelper in SamplerVk and TextureVk instead of the VkSampler directly. In a follow-up change we will improve image view caching by also improving how we store serials for ImageViews. Instead of storing a dictionary of serials to specific image views we now store a single 32-bit serial combined with subresource info. The serials combined with a subresource info (level/layer) gives a unique identifier for each ImageView in the ImageViewHelper for the descriptor set cache and the Framebuffer cache. Also moves ImageView serial allocation to initialization and release. This means we no longer need to use "getAssign" methods and instead we use a few init methods to ensure the serials stay allocated. GL_EXT_multisampled_render_to_texture is implemented using this feature. The infrastructure for specifying resolve attachments is designed with eventual support for GL_EXT_multisampled_render_to_texture2 in mind as well as optimizations to glBlitFramebuffer() and multisampled backbuffers. Proper support for glRenderbufferStorageMultisampledEXT is still missing from this change. All tests use this for the depth/stencil attachment and don't read back the data. Currently, the depth/stencil attachment is created as a normal multisampled image. This change introduces getImageForCopy() and renames getImage() to getImageForRenderPass(). Currently, all three functions do the same thing. However, with upcoming changes the semantics will be different: - getImageForRenderPass(): This is the image used as the non-resolve attachment. When resolve attachments are introduced, there will be a corresponding getResolveImageForRenderPass(). - getImageForCopy(): When GL_EXT_multisampled_render_to_texture is implemented, this will return the image that owns the data. - getImageForWrite(): Similar to getImageForCopy(), but should set mContentDefined. This is currently missing, and is a bug that will be resolved in a follow up. This split change gets the mechanical rename out of the way to make future changes simpler. Since non-base levels will be completely rendered to (using blit, so not through the staging buffer), there is no point in performing these clears for non-base levels. This change drops those clears. Note that another change will drop the clear for base level if detecting that a future update will supersede it, for example because the base level is being copied from the old image. Shahbaz Youssefi 000a79f1 2020-06-04T23:06:58 Vulkan: Better handling of texture level redefinition If a texture level is being redefined, there are two scenarios to consider: 1. The level is outside the base/max level, for which the image was allocated. 2. The level is within the base/max level, but it's being redefined to a different size or format. In the former case, we simply don't need to release the image. The latter case itself has two possibilities: 2.1. There is only one level in the image. 2.2. There are multiple levels in the image. In case 2.1, the whole image is being redefined (as it has only a single level), so the image can (and should) be released. Prior to this change, this behavior was adopted for all cases. This change retains this behavior for this case only. In case 2.2, the texture is becoming incomplete. However, the image shouldn't yet be released because another one of its mips may be bound to a framebuffer. In such cases as glCopyTexImage2D(), that framebuffer may in fact be the source of the copy operation (which would be destroyed if the image is released). If the base/max level of the texture doesn't change, redefining the level and making the texture incomplete doesn't make the framebuffer incomplete; this is achieved at the same time by not releasing the image. This change ensures that updates to the redefined level are staged in cases 1 and 2.2. We apply the deferred clears onto the RenderPass right before we begin to draw. Storing the clears in the ImageHelper solves problems where we clear GL Textures in a Framebuffer and then unbind the Textures and sample from them. Or do other commands like CopyTexImage. Note that because the staging buffer clears only handle full-image clears we need to immediately apply some scissored clears where before we would use the RP. This should be a pretty rare occurrence and it is possible to optimize that in the future. Reduces the RenderPass count in the Manhattan "frame 10" trace from max 22 to max 20. May improve perf slightly on Android or may have effects too small to measure. Should not regress performance. The Vulkan spec, regarding vkCmdClearColorImage, mentions that: "image must not have a compressed or depth/stencil format" The proper way of initializing the memory of a compressed image in Vulkan is to do a buffer to image copy instead. This was added to ImageHelper::stageRobustResourceClear() so that it may now handle compressed textures properly. It adds support for appending clear image commands as well as prepend (the default). We prepend clears because image initialization happens after data upload. The Vulkan robust clear path now works like the other back-ends. The change flushed out a bug where partially uninitialized CopyTexImage was not correctly initializing a texture before triggering a full resource clear. Texture::copyImage now uses a workaround where we first init the image before clearing it. After the init we upload the new data. We'll use the appending clears path when implementing deferred clears. Makes several flaky robust resource initialization tests consistently fail. Controlled via an angle::Feature in FeaturesVk. It works by initializing memory to an abitrary non-zero value: - if newly allocated memory is mappable, we map it in init and set it - if a buffer or texture can be a transfer destination, we use a staging resource - otherwise we don't attempt to initialize the resource. This initial prototype introduces a new feature to the Vulkan back-end that disables the deferred command recording. The intent is to have a lower CPU overhead during submission calls which currently walk a DAG. The feature is not complete. Currently it only passes the ANGLE SimpleOperationTests. Moreover it is extremely simple and only allows use of one command buffer at a time. In the future we'll allow open command buffers for recording outside and inside render pass commands at the same time. We'll also support collapsing RenderPasses together for some use cases. Currently the prototype only passes "SimpleOperationTest".
