Shahbaz Youssefi 7b0bb0f6 2023-09-01T13:52:28 Properly "install" program executables According to GL: - The program has an executable - The executable is overwritten during link. - After a failed link, queries of the executable may return half-linked information - On glUseProgram, the executable is installed in the context - On glUseProgramStages, the executable is installed in the program pipeline - After a successful link, the executable is updated wherever the previous executable of the program was installed. This change implements exactly the above: - The program's and the program pipeline's executables are now shared_ptr. References to an executable in the context and PPO are also through a shared_ptr. Installing an executable thus translates to sharing the executable. - The context and PPOs are made to not reference the program directly, but work solely through the executable. As a result, the program is free to create a new executable for link. With this change, the link job will be free to modify the executable as necessary because that will not be accessed until the link is done. Note that previous changes made the backend executable accessed through the frontend one, and moved all link results to the frontend and backend executables as appropriate. Shahbaz Youssefi 6ff209bc 2023-08-30T00:02:30 Clean up InfoLog usage during link The info log doesn't really belong to ProgramExecutable; it belongs to ProgramState. However, it is placed there for convenience since many functions access it. This change cleans up usage of InfoLog so the one in ProgramExecutable is consistently used, but also that is turned into a reference to ProgramState's InfoLog. This is necessary for a follow up change that restores the previous executable on link failure (and would thus otherwise lose the info log of the failing link). Charlie Lao 03f9dff6 2023-08-21T16:57:12 Separate out std::vector<GLuint> boundTextureUnits from SamplerBinding SamplerBinding struct is trivial copy-able except the std::vector<GLuint> boundTextureUnits. This CL moves boundTextureUnits out of the SamplerBinding struct and becomes a vector in ProgramExecutable. This means all of sampler binding's texture units will be stored in one vector and SamplerBinding will remember where its own texture units is stored in that vector by keeping textureUnitsStartIndex and textureUnitsCount. In other word, SamplerBinding::boundTextureUnits (before this CL) is equivalent to mSamplerBoundTextureUnits[SamplerBinding.textureUnitsStartIndex], ..., mSamplerBoundTextureUnits[SamplerBinding.textureUnitsStartIndex + SamplerBinding.textureUnitsCount - 1] after this CL. With this, ProgramExecutable::mSamplerBindings are load/stored with one readBytes/writeBytes call since it is trivially copyable. Shahbaz Youssefi d8f088e0 2023-08-14T11:07:24 GL: Remove parallel compile/link without driver support This feature was practically disabled everywhere due to various bugs, and is complicating the code. In effect, the code was always spawning a thread for the compilation and link jobs, immediately fail it (due to a workaround), then do the job when compile/link is resolved (much closer to draw time). This leads to bad user experience, but also is racy because the shaders may get recompiled in the meantime and there is little the GL backend could do to stop that (efficiently). After this change, parallel compile/link is either done by the driver (if supported), or it isn't done. This is a partial revert of a100d8f471f79b9f88d387164992cc5bd9c6ee9f. Shahbaz Youssefi f3c1de36 2023-08-17T15:29:24 Make shader recompile while parallel linking safe Prior to this change, Program* objects held references to Shader* objects. This poses a problem where a shader recompile can race with a program link, if the program link is done in parallel. As a result, a good chunk of the link job is done serially and under the share group lock. After this change, that is no longer a problem, and most of the link can be made lockless/parallelized. This change separates out the "compiled state" from the rest of the shader state. This was already done for the front-end state (for the sake of caching), but is also now done for the backends that need it. The compiled state in turn is placed in a shared_ptr, and is shared with the program. When a shader is compiled, its own shared_ptr is replaced with a new object, leaving all programs currently compiling unaffected and using the previous compilation results. Once a program is linked, its references to compiled shader states is updated. Charlie Lao 1e1c9d9d 2023-08-11T15:16:26 Pack and reduce Program::mProgramInput size Right now mProgramInput is std::vector<sh::ShaderVariable>. It really only need a subset of ShaderVariable struct. This CL adds a ProgramInput struct so that we can add data members that actually required. This CL also makes bools into bitfield and some variables to uint16_t to further compact the size. This CL also groups the data memebers other than string to basicDataTypeStruct which only contains basic data types and the entire struct is memcpied during program binary load and save. This not just reduces number of memcpy calls, but also improves reliability so that when someone adds a new member into the struct, it will automatically load/save correctly. This means setting the transform feedback varyings to 0 when transform feedback is not used. Skip this call to synchronize transform feedback varyings when it will have no effect. This is a speculative fix for crashes on IMG drivers. Some of the logs mention glTransformFeedbackVaryings reading invalid memory. Tim Van Patten b0e15ee4 2021-12-28T20:37:33 Decide GL_KHR_parallel_shader_compile in backends GL_KHR_parallel_shader_compile was previously being enabled unconditionally in the front end. However, some backends (Vulkan) perform worse with parallel shader compilation. This CL moves the decision of enabling GL_KHR_parallel_shader_compile to the backends. To support single-threaded shader compilation without affecting the generic worker thread pool, Context::mSingleThreadPool is added to own the single-threaded WorkerThreadPool and can be returned by the new function Context::getShaderCompileThreadPool(). Otherwise, if the extension is enabled, the (renamed) Context::mMultiThreadPool is returned. Prior to this change, their declaration as webgl_FragColor and webgl_FragData was done in text. The ProgramGL's link method is broken down by introducing the LinkEventGL class. The patch includes the API entrypoints, validation and also implementation on the desktop GL backend. Instead of having built-in fragment color variables, ESSL 3.00 has custom output variables, which can now be bound to either primary or secondary output color locations. The "index" set to a custom output variable determines whether it's used a primary or secondary blending source color. The shader layout qualifier takes precedence over the bind call. This is not specified in the EXT spec, but is specified in desktop OpenGL specs. The extension is disabled on AMD and Intel because of test failures. If a Program is in linking state, on the one hand the foreground thread may continue issuing more GL calls, and on the other hand the background linking threads may be accessing Program internally too. Without a proper constraint there must be conflicts between them. For this purpose, we block any further GL calls to Program until it's actually linked. In addition, we prohibit parallel linking an active program, so that ProgramD3D does not have to worry about such similar conflicts. Also changes the WorkerThread to support limiting the number of concurrently running worker threads. Olli Etuaho 107c7247 2018-03-20T15:45:35 ShaderVariable: separate fields for staticUse and active Thus far the compiler has used the "staticUse" flag to mark variables that should have rather been marked "active", meaning that the code may actually execute in a way that accesses the variable. There's a clear definition for this use of the term "active" in the GLES 3.0.5 spec, section 2.12.6, and in GLES 3.1 section 7.3.1. Having separate fields for recording static use and "activeness" of a variable is the first step to fixing this. According to the spec, usually only active resources should be considered when checking use against max limits. Also, only active uniforms get assigned a location. libANGLE code now correctly checks the active flag rather than the static use flag in these cases. The static use field still mirrors the active field for now, since some code in Chromium also needs to be fixed to use the active field correctly before the two can diverge. After Chromium is fixed, we can fix ANGLE so that static use information is recorded earlier during compilation and will accurately reflect whether variables are statically used. Currently the compiler only records variables once some static use may already have been pruned from the AST. The specs for program interface variable queries are built on top of this section. ANGLE has already followed this spec for the most part for generating variable lists in ProgramState, but now we also follow the naming spec for arrays and include [0] at the end of the stored name. This will make implementing arrays of arrays more straightforward. Most logic for variable queries will just keep working as is when arrays of arrays are added instead of needing more complex logic for handling array indexing. Internal names such as names of temporary variables created in AST transformations are written out as such. This makes handling of internal function names and internal variable names consistent. It also removes the possibility of name conflicts between user-defined names and internal names in case name hashing is not on. In the same vein, it makes it safe to use GLSL reserved words that are not reserved in ESSL as variable names in case name hashing is not on. This also makes the GLSL output more consistent with how names are handled in HLSL output. Name hashing code is shared between VariableInfo and OutputGLSLBase to ensure names are handled consistently in both. The name that's used in the shader source for a given interface variable is written out to ShaderVariable::mappedName. An exception needs to be made for identifiers close to the length limit, since adding any prefix would take them over the limit. But they can be just written out as such, since we don't have any builtins or ANGLE internal variables that have as long names and could create a conflict. Jamie Madill 54164b0c 2017-08-28T15:17:37 Add getUniform impl methods. This will let us remove some of the uniform data management code in the GL front-end, and simplify the GL back-end. It will also enable us to implement uniform data more efficiently in the D3D11 back-end, and probably Vulkan back-end later. This also implements a new impl method for the ProgramGL class to flag optimized-out uniforms as no longer used, post-link. This is important because otherwise the optimized uniforms get assigned valid locations, and then the getUniform calls are expected to succeed. We also use a workaround for uniform value queries for the GL back-end. It seems as though some drivers (seen on NVIDIA and AMD) may not properly clamp to the maximum representable integer value when querying out-of-range floating point values. Work around this by always calling the driver with the proper type and then casting the value in ANGLE.
