be: make the code in bufferevent_socket_connect() more reliable
There is one icky in case for windows:
if (sa) {
#ifdef _WIN32
if (bufferevent_async_can_connect_(bev)) {
bufferevent_setfd(bev, fd);
r = bufferevent_async_connect_(bev, fd, sa, socklen);
if (r < 0)
goto freesock;
bufev_p->connecting = 1;
result = 0;
goto done;
- } else
+ } else {
#endif
r = evutil_socket_connect_(&fd, sa, socklen);
if (r < 0) // Previosly this line was executed
// regardless of bufferevent_async_can_connect_(), but the case under
// bufferevent_async_can_connect_() always does goto, so it is 100% the
// same code, but just to make it more cleaner
goto freesock;
+#ifdef _WIN32
+ }
+#endif
}

Revert "Remove dead code from bufferevent_socket_connect"
That wasn't the dead code, since the `r` could be `2` in case of
`ECONNREFUSED`, and it should trigger errorcb not the writecb.
This is actually questionable should be call errorcb at all in case of
connect() returns an error immediately, but I guess the reason was to
make it compatible with others, ECONNREFUSED can be returned only for
specific cases and only on BSD (AFAIK). While for instance EHOSTUNREACH
is not.
And after this change now all tests are passed on FreeBSD. Well,
sometimes few tests fails due to timing issues, but in general looks
good. Since even all tests in parallel passed:
$ rm -f /tmp/libevent*log; bin/regress --list-tests | awk '/^ / { print $1 }' | xargs -I{} -P100 bash -c 'n={}; bin/regress --no-fork --verbose $n |& tee /tmp/libevent-test-${n//\//_}.log' |& grep -F ' [FAILED' |& tee /tmp/libevent-tests.log
And having green CI is crucial for libevent, not only because it is
a rule of thumb for all projects, but also because in case of failures
it will retry on and on, which will cause CI stuck.

windows has intptr_t instead of regular int.
Also tt_fd_op() had been introduced, since we cannot use tt_int_op() for

Remove check against passed bufferevent in bufferevent_socket_connect()
It is a bit confusing to check against the result of EVUTIL_UPCAST(),
because it can return not NULL for NULL pointers, but for even though
with bufferevent we are fine (because bufferevent is the first field in
bufferevent_private), there are no checks for "bufev" in bufferevent's
API, so just remove it to make it generic.

be: fix with filtered bufferevents and connect() without EAGAIN
With filtered bufferevents (i.e. not real one, that have socket), we can
trigger incorrect callback in this case. Let's look at example with http
and bufferevent_openssl_filter_new():
- bev = bufferevent_openssl_filter_new()
- http layer trying to connect() to localhost with bev
# at this time, bev have writecb/readcb NULL but ev_write/ev_read has
# timeout with 45 secs, default HTTP connect timeout
- and when connect() retruns without EAGAIN (BSD'ism) we called
event_active() before (with EV_WRITE), and this will call ev_write
timeout only, while it is more correct to act on bufferevent instead
of plain event, so let's trigger EV_WRITE for bufferevent which will
do the job (and let's do this deferred).

be_sock: handle readv() returns ECONNREFUSED (freebsd 9.2)
During testing sometimes bufferevent/bufferevent_connect_fail_eventcb fails,
and after some digging I found that this was the case when connect() doesn't
return ECONNREFUSED immediately, and instead next operation will return it (in
our case evbuffer_read()->readv(), needless to say that after this
bufferevent_writecb() called and it checks error with getsockopt() but of
course it doesn't return any error), so this patch checks "errno" after
"readv()" and installs "bufev::connection_refused" flag, to handle this from
writecb and only once.

be_sock: cancel in-progress dns requests
Before this patch we didn't have such functionality and this can cause some
issues when we are cancelling HTTP request while after this we will get a
response/timeout from the NS and in this case error_cb will be called and can
damage newly started HTTP request.
We could also have problems with connect, but we don't have them since we
closes the fd in HTTP layer.
This is not so good that this is done in be_sock, but it is internal, so we can
change without pain. Plus I don't like that callback-via-evutil, but since we
have event_extra we need do like that.
And after this patch the following tests doesn't report leaks:

bufferevent: move conn_address out from http into bufferevent
In http the only case when when we could store it is when we already
connected, *but* if we are doing request using domain name, then we need
to do request to nameserver to get IP address, and this is handled by
bufferevent.
So when we have IP address (from nameserver) and don't have connection
to this IP address, we could already cache it to avoid extra DNS
requests (since UDP is slow), and we can't do this from http layer, only
from bufferevent.

Use finalization feature so bufferevents can avoid deadlocks
Since the bufferevents' events are now EV_FINALIZE (name pending),
they won't deadlock. To clean up properly, though, we must use the
finalization feature.
This patch also split bufferevent deallocation into an "unlink" step
that happens fast, and a "destruct" step that happens after
finalization.
More work is needed: there needs to be a way to specify a finalizer
for the bufferevent's argument itself. Also, this finalizer business
makes lots of the reference counting we were doing unnecessary.
Also, more testing is needed.

Restore our priority-inversion-prevention code with deferreds
Back when deferred_cb stuff had its own queue, the queue was always
executed, but we never ran more than 16 callbacks per iteration.
That made for two problems:
1: Because deferred_cb stuff would always run, and had no priority,
it could cause priority inversion.
2: It doesn't respect the max_dispatch_interval code.
Then, when I refactored deferred_cb to be a special case of
event_callback, that solved the above issues, but made for two more
issues:
3: Because deferred_cb stuff would always get the default priority,
it could could low-priority bufferevents to get too much priority.
4: With code like bufferevent_pair, it's easy to get into a
situation where two deferreds keep adding one another, preventing
the event loop from ever actually scanning for more events.
This commit fixes the above by giving deferreds a better notion of
priorities, and by limiting the number of deferreds that can be
added to the _current_ loop iteration's active queues. (Extra
deferreds are put into the active_later state.)
That isn't an all-purpose priority inversion solution, of course: for
that, you may need to mess around with max_dispatch_interval.

Have all visible internal function names end with an underscore.
We haven't had a convention for naming internal functions in -internal.h
versus naming visible functions in include/**.h. This patch changes every
function declared in a -internal.h file to be named ending with an

Static function names are unaffected, since there's no risk of calling them

Fix all identifiers with names beginning with underscore.
These are reserved in C. We'd been erroneously using them to indicate
internal use.
Instead, we now use a trailing underscore whenever we'd been using a leading
underscore.
This is an automatic conversion. The script that produced was made by
running the following script over the output of
git ls-tree -r --name-only HEAD | grep '\.[ch]$' | \
xargs ctags --c-kinds=defglmpstuvx -o - | grep '^_' | \
cut -f 1 | sort| uniq
(GNU ctags was required.)

Convert event-config.h macros to avoid reserved identifiers
C reserves all identifiers beginning with an underscore for system
use. But we had been mangling our autoconf identifiers with the
prefix "_EVENT_" to avoid conflict with other programs.
Instead, we will now use the prefix "EVENT__". With any luck, the
double-underscore will still hint "here be dragons" to anybody
tempted to think that event-config.h is a stable api.
This is an automatically generated patch. The script that produced
it was made by running this script over config.h.in:
=====
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
# Run this on config.h.in
use strict;
my %macros = ();
while (<>) {
if (/^# *undef +([A-Za-z0-9_]+)/) {
$macros{$1} = 1;
}
}
print "#!/usr/bin/perl -w -i -p\n\n";
for my $k (sort keys %macros) {
print "s/(?<![A-Za-z0-9_])_EVENT_$k(?![A-Za-z0-9_])/EVENT__$k/g;\n";
}
== And the script that it generated was then run over all .c and .h files:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w -i -p

Prefer mmap to sendfile unless a DRAINS_TO_FD flag is set. Allows add_file to work with SSL.
The sendfile() implementation for evbuffer_add_file is potentially more
efficient, but it has a problem: you can only use it to send bytes over
a socket using sendfile(). If you are writing bytes via SSL_send() or
via a filter, or if you need to be able to inspect your buffer, it
doesn't work.
As an easy fix, this patch disables the sendfile-based implementation of
evbuffer_add_file on an evbuffer unless the user sets a new
EVBUFFER_FLAG_DRAINS_TO_FD flag on that evbuffer, indicating that the
evbuffer will not be inspected, but only written out via
evbuffer_write(), evbuffer_write_atmost(), or drained with stuff like
evbuffer_drain() or evbuffer_add_buffer(). This flag is off by
default, except for evbuffers used for output on bufferevent_socket.
In the future, it could be interesting to make a best-effort file
segment implementation that tries to send via sendfile, but mmaps on
demand. That's too much complexity for a stable release series, though.

Replace EVUTIL_CLOSESOCKET macro with a function
The EVUTIL_CLOSESOCKET() macro required you to include unistd.h in your
source for POSIX. We might as well turn it into a function: an extra
function call is going to be cheap in comparison with the system call.
We retain the EVUTIL_CLOSESOCKET() macro as an alias for the new
evutil_closesocket() function.

Small cleanups on freebsd-connect-refused patch.
There should be no need to call be_socket_enable: that does an
event_add(). What we really want to do is event_active(), to make
sure that the writecb is executed.
Also, there was one "} if () {" that was missing an else.
I've noted that the return value for evutil_socket_connect() is
getting screwy, but since that isn't an exported function, we can fix
it whenever.

Provide consistent, tested semantics for bufferevent timeouts
The different bufferevent implementations had different behavior for
their timeouts. Some of them kept re-triggering the timeouts
indefinitely; some disabled the event immediately the first time a
timeout triggered. Some of them made the timeouts only count when
the bufferevent was actively trying to read or write; some did not.
The new behavior is modeled after old socket bufferevents, since
they were here first and their behavior is relatively sane.
Basically, each timeout disables the bufferevent's corresponding
read or write operation when it fires. Timeouts are stopped
whenever we suspend writing or reading, and reset whenever we
unsuspend writing or reading. Calling bufferevent_enable resets a
timeout, as does changing the timeout value.

Most of these should be unable to fail, since adding a timeout

for; I've marked those with "XXXX" comments.

Fix crash bugs when a bufferevent's eventcb is not set.
In many places throughout the code, we called _bufferevent_run_eventcb
without checking whether the eventcb was actually set. This would
work fine when the bufferevent's callbacks were deferred, but
otherwise the code would segfault. Strangely, we always remembered to
check before calling the _bufferevent_run_{read,write}cb functions.
To prevent similar errors in the future, all of
_buferevent_run_{read,write,event}cb now check to make sure the
callback is actually set before invoking or deferring the callback.
This patch also removes the now-redundant checks for {read,write}cb.

Add a temporary workaround for an ssl bug found on FreeBSD.
Basically, we only want to report the 'connected' event because of
the socket connect() finishing when we have an actual socket
bufferevent; on an SSL bufferevent, 'connected' means 'SSL
connection finished.'
This isn't FreeBSD's fault: it just has a connect() that tends to
succeed pretty early.

On connect, call only one of BEV_EVENT_CONNECTED or writecb.
Previously, if we had a socket bufferevent in connect state, we'd send
both of these to indicate that the connection was done. That was broken
since the point of adding BEV_EVENT_CONNECTED was so that we could
distinguish "we're connected" and "we wrote something".
Now, writecb is called only when
A) the connection finished but the user never put the socket into a
"connecting" state, or
B) data was actually written.

Bufferevent support for openssl.
This code adds a new Bufferevent type that is only compiled when the
openssl library is present. It supports using an SSL object and an
event alert mechanism, which can either be an fd or an underlying
bufferevent.
There is still more work to do: the unit tests are incomplete, and we
need to support flush and shutdown much better. Sometimes events are
generated needlessly: this will hose performance.
There's a new encrypting proxy in sample/le-proxy.c.
This code has only been tested on OSX, and nowhere else.

Always hold a reference to a bufferevent when calling its callbacks.
Rationale: we hold a lock on the bufferevent when its callbacks are
executing, so we need to release the lock afterwards. But the
callback might free the bufferevent, so unless we're holding a
reference on the bufferevent, the lock might not be there for us to
release.
