Sean Callanan cb3b51a6 2025-09-12T20:45:38 Vulkan: Respect externalFormat properties for AHB When the Vulkan driver sets `VK_FORMAT_FEATURE_COLOR_ATTACHMENT_BIT` in `VkAndroidHardwareBufferFormatPropertiesANDROID::formatFeatures`, ANGLE has the option of using `VK_FORMAT_UNDEFINED` rather than the reported `VkAndroidHardwareBufferFormatPropertiesANDROID::format` if the feature set is what is desired. This patch introduces separate checks of `formatFeatures` and the capabilities of `format`, and modifies the validation and creation of `VKImage`s to specify a format explicitly only when this would be necessary to conform to user intent expressed by the usage of the AHB. This change allows such platforms to use a BGR565 image in the backend instead of an RGB565 image when using Vulkan, when the corresponding flag is enabled: preferBGR565ToRGB565 * Updated the formats to include B5G6R5 as a fallback to R5G6B5, which would be triggered when the corresponding feature flag is enabled. * The only exception would be when the surface is being initialized as R5G6B5. * In addition, this format will not be subject to forced format fallback. * Added VVL skip that specifically does not allow undefined format for border color for certain formats, including B5G6R5 if flag enabled. * Some suites with RGB565 tests will be run with preferBGR565ToRGB565 enabled on SwS to provide better test coverage. That will happen in a follow-on CL, along with resolving any stragglers missed here. This is mostly a manual change so as to familiarize myself with the kinds of issues faced by the Angle codebase when applying buffer safety warnings. -- Re-generate affected hashes. -- Clang-format applied to all changed files. -- Add a few missing .reserve() calls to vectors as noticed. -- Fix some mismatches between file names and header comments. -- Be more consistent with header comment format (blank lines and trailing //-only lines when a filename comment adjoins license boilerplate). Roman Lavrov cfb430c8 2025-02-10T13:19:05 Remove angle::ErrorStream helper Most uses of the helper either use just the code or a fixed string, which compiles to a few instructions. Using this helper adds 200+ bytes of assembly to each use, due to the unneeded instantiation of ostringstream which allocates a buffer etc. The combined effect of this CL on an Android perf build is ~12KB (0.2%) reduction in size. The cases where the message is actually formatted are converted to an explicit use of ostringstream. Removing the helper so that the new code is explicit about the intent to use ostringstream, or an alternative way to format the message. Discovered accidentally while looking into size reduction due to __builtin_unreachable() Semi-automated code change, risk of copy-paste mistakes should be minimal. It seems to be due to the fact that the memory is not allocated as a dedicated memory for the buffer, whereas the buffer requirements (as reported in vkGetBufferMemoryRequirements2()) show that it requires a dedicated memory. This causes an issue when binding the buffer to the memory. This change explicitly sets the dedicated memory information for the external buffer, so the memory is regarded as dedicated and be able to be bound to the buffer without errors. * Added VkMemoryDedicatedAllocateInfo when calling to allocate memory for the external buffer (InitAndroidExternalMemory()). * Appended this structure to the extra allocation info via pNext. * Unsuppressed VUID-vkBindBufferMemory-buffer-01444. Now that we support renderable YUV textures, there are now three interesting cases: 1) The texture has a VkFormat, and so filtering support can be queried from GPDFP, as was already done. 2) The texture is imported from an opaque AHB using an external format, that format is renderable, and so we have assigned one of the EXTERNALn angle formats. This was *not* covered properly, and would lead to VVL errors or UB. 3) The texture is imported from an opaque AHB using an external format, and we have not assigned an EXTERNALn angle format to it, because the format is not renderable, or the Vulkan driver is missing the external format resolve functionality; In this case the angle format is NONE. This was similarly *not* covered properly, although the code did attempt to protect itself from querying the capabilities of format NONE. VVL errors and UB were still possible. To most simply cover all of these cases, capture whether the image has the VK_FORMAT_FEATURE_SAMPLED_IMAGE_YCBCR_CONVERSION_LINEAR_FILTER feature upfront, and forget about format lookups in the internals of the YcbcrConversionDesc. This leads to attempting to get format bits for angle::FormatID::NONE / VK_FORMAT_UNDEFINED. This CL adds R8G8B8_UNORM to vk_format_map.json, so devices that support it, like ARM, can use it. For example, R4G4B4A4 are not renderable on nvidia and not blendable on ARM. R5G5B5A1 are also not blendable on nvidia. Right now when we generate format table, we are being most conservative, picking an actual format that is always renderable and blendable. This means when R4G4B4A4 is used on one of these GPUs, we are always falling back to R8G8B8A8 regardless if the texture is actually being used as color attachment or not. This CL adds a actualRenderableImageFormatID field in vk::Format. Initially we will pick actualImageFormatID which only ensures texture sample capability. If later on the texture is being attached to FBO, then we will switch to actualRenderableImageFormatID and do data copy if necessary. This way we save memory and reduce texture bandwidth for most usage of these textures. For renderBuffer and surfaces and EGLImages, we always pick the renderable textures. Jason Macnak 41a2672f 2020-09-03T11:05:54 Vulkan: Use optimal tiling for AHB When running Android on certain GPUs, there are problems creating Vulkan image siblings of AHardwareBuffers because it's currently assumed that the underlying driver can create linear tiling images that have input attachment usage, which isn't supported on NVIDIA for example, resulting in failure to create the image siblings. Yet, we don't currently take advantage of linear elsewhere in ANGLE. To maintain maximum compatibility on Android for such drivers, use optimal tiling for image siblings. Note that while we have switched to optimal unconditionally in this path versus linear, it's possible that previously compatible linear usages might become uncompatible after switching to optimal. However, from what we've seen on NVIDIA/AMD/Intel/Samsung GPUs so far, formats generally have more possible usages in optimal tiling versus linear tiling: http://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/displayreport.php?id=10804#formats_linear http://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/displayreport.php?id=10804#formats_optimal http://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/displayreport.php?id=10807#formats_linear http://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/displayreport.php?id=10807#formats_optimal http://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/displayreport.php?id=10809#formats_linear http://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/displayreport.php?id=10809#formats_optimal http://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/displayreport.php?id=10787#formats_linear http://vulkan.gpuinfo.org/displayreport.php?id=10787#formats_optimal Also, as an aside, in terms of what's generally expected from the Vulkan ICD in Android when determining AHB compatibility, if the vendor wants to declare a particular combinatino of format/tiling/usage/etc as not supported AHB-wise, it's up to the ICD vendor to zero out bits in supportedHandleTypes in the vkGetPhysicalDeviceImageFormatProperties2 query: ``` * [VUID-VkImageCreateInfo-pNext-00990](https://www.khronos.org/registry/vulkan/specs/1.2-extensions/html/vkspec.html#VUID-VkImageCreateInfo-pNext-00990) If the pNext chain includes a VkExternalMemoryImageCreateInfo structure, its handleTypes member must only contain bits that are also in VkExternalImageFormatProperties::externalMemoryProperties.compatibleHandleTypes, as returned by vkGetPhysicalDeviceImageFormatProperties2 with format, imageType, tiling, usage, and flags equal to those in this structure, and with a VkPhysicalDeviceExternalImageFormatInfo structure included in the pNext chain, with a handleType equal to any one of the handle types specified in VkExternalMemoryImageCreateInfo::handleTypes ``` Bug: angleproject:5709 Change-Id: I67b65ab830505a9df4665ccea8e2ba1ca409e0b5 Reviewed-on: https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/angle/angle/+/2729243 Reviewed-by: Shahbaz Youssefi <syoussefi@chromium.org> Reviewed-by: Jamie Madill <jmadill@chromium.org> Commit-Queue: Lingfeng Yang <lfy@google.com>

The end goal of the refactor is to allow the Vulkan back-end to store packed tables indexed by FormatID. Because VkFormat has large gaps in its enum space we'd otherwise need to use unordered data structures like unordered_map. The change removes the redundant VkFormat storage from vk::Format and uses a new table query to return the VkFormat that 1:1 matches an angle::FormatID. We also include a reverse mapping for use with native Vulkan get functions for Android. Also moves sRGB conversion functions into renderer_utils. A couple sRGB formats that don't exist in GL are no longer handled by the sRGB conversion functions. These formats should be extremely rare.
